Homophone means pronounced the same as another word. However the words which are homophones have different meanings and/or spellings.

(“Homo-” means the same, “-phone” means sound. “Homophone” means the same sound.)



Examples:

  • The words “mail” and “male” are homophones. ( They are pronounced the same but we can not use “mail” instead of “male” in a sentence.)
  • The words “sea” and “see” are homophones. ( They are pronounced the same but we also can not use “sea” instead of “see” in a sentence.
