“in case” vs “in case of” in English

“IN CASE” VS ” IN CASE OF” 


Differences Between “in case of” and ” in case ” in English

“in case” and “in case of”, both of them, connect two clauses. However, there are some basic differences in terms of their uses.

1. “IN CASE OF”

“in case of “ AS A PREPOSITION  ( IN THE EVENT OF SOMETHING )

” in case of “ is used to say what we should do if or when something happens. In other words, ” in case of “ means ” in  the event of ( a particular situation)”

  • ” in case of “ is a preposition we use with a noun to mean if or when something happens.

The structure of ” in case of “;

 In Case Of + A Noun ( or Ving )

2. “IN CASE”

“in case” AS A CONJUNCTION  ( ACTION/PLAN – POSSIBLE REASON )

“in case”, as a conjunction, is used to connect two clauses. The clause which start with “in case” introduces the possible reason of the first clause. ( what possible reason something is done )

  • “in case” is used before the clause which indicates the possible reason/cause.

The structure of ” in case “;

  A Main Clause + In Case + A Reason Clause

  •    I will not go to my office by my car in case it snows. ( Action – Possible Reason )

             ( It snows – possibility ( reason ) / I will not go… – precaution ( action ) )

  •    My mother put a cake in my handbag in case I was hungry. ( Action – Possible Reason )

             ( I was hungry – possibility ( reason ) / My mother put a cake… – precaution ( action ) )

  •    Her father always gives her some money in case she need it. ( Action – Possible Reason )

             ( She need it – possibility ( reason ) / Her father always gives her some money – precaution ( action ) )
