Structure of Present Perfect Tense

PRESENT PERFECT TENSE

The tenses simply show the time of an action.

Present Perfect Tense is used to express an event that started in the past and the impact of the event is now continuing (or a long-running event that started in the past and is still going on). This tense is used to express actions completed recent past. In this tense, it is important whether the event occured or not. ( or the result of the event is important, not the time of the event ).

The Structures of Present Perfect Tense

POSITIVE FORMS (+):  

  • Subject ( I, You, We, You, They ) + HAVE + V3 ( third form of main verb – past participle )
  • Subject ( He, She, It ) + HAS + V3 ( third form of main verb – past participle )

NEGATIVE FORMS (-):

  • Subject ( I, You, We, You, They ) + HAVE  + NOT + V3 ( third form of main verb – past participle )
  • Subject ( He, She, It ) + HAS + NOT + V3 ( third form of main verb – past participle )

QUESTION FORMS (?):

  • HAVE  + Subject ( I, You, We, You, They ) + V3 ( third form of main verb – past participle )
  • HAS + Subject ( He, She, It ) + V3 ( third form of main verb – past participle )

SHORT ANSWER FORMS (?):

  • YES + Subject + have/has
  • NO + Subject + have/has NOT

I have started I have not (haven’t) started Have I started

He has started He has not (hasn’t) started Has he started

Positive Sentences ( Sbj + have/has + V3 )

Examples:

  • have already prepared breakfast.
  • My sister has cleaned the room.
  • It has rained a lot lately.
  • have seen her before.
  • She has watched this movie several times.
  • He has saved $20.000.000 up until now.
  • They have gone fishing until later this evening.
  • have solved 20 questions so far.
  • My mother has cooked the dinner.
  • We have received many mail since we were retired.
  • have already made the coffee.
  • You have already eaten four plums.
  • have lived in Texas for 10 years.


Negative Sentences ( Sbj +have/has + not + V3 )

Examples:

  • have not (haven’t) prepared breakfast yet.
  • My sister has not (hasn’t) cleaned the room.
  • It has not (hasn’t) rained a lot.
  • I have not (haven’t) seen her before.
  • She has not (hasn’t) watched this movie several times.
  • He has not (hasn’t) saved any money until now.
  • They have not (haven’t) gone fishing this weekend.
  • I have not (haven’t) solved 20 questions so far.
  • My mother has not (hasn’t) the dinner yet.
  • We have not (haven’t) received any mail since we were retired.
  • I have not (haven’t) made the coffee yet.
  • You have not (haven’t) eaten a lot.
  • I have not (haven’t) lived in London.

Question Sentences ( Have/Has + Sbj + V3 )


Examples:

  • Have you prepared breakfast?
  • Has she cleaned the room?
  • Has it rained a lot ?
