Using “Such” in English

USING “Such” IN ENGLISH

1. “Such” + ADJECTIVE + NOUN

First of all, we can use “such” with “adjective+noun” to show extremes.  In this case, 

“Such” gives meaning  to the words which are expressed,“very”  or “that much”.

ATTENTION 1:

If we use “such” with  singular nouns, we need an article “a or an” after “such” or before “adjective”in a sentence.

If we use “such” with  plural countable/uncountable nouns, we don’t need any articles after “such” in a sentence.

ATTENTION 2:

“Such” + ADJECTIVE NOUN + THAT + RESULT

We can also use “such” with “adjective + noun+ that” to explain the result. And also, it is used to express extreme feelings or an opinion about something.

2. “Such” + JUDGEMENTAL NOUN

We can use “such” with judgemental nouns for emphasis, especially in exclamations. 

ATTENTION:

“Such” + JUDGEMENTAL NOUN + THAT + RESULT

We can also use “such” with “judgemental noun+ that” to explain the result. And also, it is used to express extreme feelings or an opinion about something.

3. “Such” + NOUNS ( Such meaning is “This or That kind of …” )

In this case, “such” means “this kind/type of …”.

We can use “such” with “countable or uncountable nouns”.

ATTENTION 1:

If we use “such” with  singular nouns, we need an article “a or an” after “such” in a sentence.

If we use “such” with  plural countable/uncountable nouns, we don’t need any articles after “such” in a sentence.

ATTENTION 2:

If we want to use much/many/few/little with or before nouns, we can not use “such”. In this case, we use “so” instead of “such”.

“So” + MUCH/MANY/FEW/LITTLE + NOUN 

4. “Such + and + Such”

“such and such” is used to refer to something that you don’t want to name or say exactly. ( Something is definite but not named )
