Seasons in English

Season is one of the four periods of the year which are characterized by particular conditions of weather, temperature, etc.

There are four seasons in a year. These are;

  • Summer
  • Winter
  • Spring
  • Autumn ( in the rest of the world ) / Fall ( used in U.S. )

Each season has three months and its own characteristics. Let see them below;

Attention:

1) The months of the seasons are all capitalized. On the other hand, the seasons are not capitalized.

Examples:

  • He died in January.

2)Using “in” and “on” as prepositions with months and seasons of the year

in” is used with months and seasons. However it is not used for specific days.

Examples:

  • She likes swimming in summer.
  • He will come back in April.

on” is used with specific days during a month.

Examples:

  • My son’s birthday is on 10th May.
  • They will get married on 30th August.

3)Using “in” or “in the” with seasons

We can use both of them with season. But if we talk about a specific season, we should use “in the” with season.

Examples:

  • Days get dark late in ( the ) summer. ( “in” or “in the” – it doesn’t matter )
  • The president will call an election in the autumn. ( It is a specific season so we should use “in the” before season )

4)We make generalization about the seasons. However, all parts of the world do not have four seasons. The seasons may change depending on latitude.

5)The seasons and their months in the Northern Hemisphere are opposite to those in the Southern Hemisphere. ( as you can see above )
